Match Preview: Gael Monfils vs. Rafael Nadal

Gael Monfils and Rafael Nadal

Gael Monfils will be facing Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 on Sunday at 6:00pm.

How to Watch:

If you’re planning on watching Rafa face off against Gael Monfils tomorrow, some places you can watch are on the ESPN website, the Australian Open website and on EuroSport.

Previous Meeting: Rafa vs. Gael.

Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils have faced a total of fourteen times. Rafa has won twelve out of those fourteen times, leaving Gael with only two victories. However, Gael has had an astounding record recently with most of his matches being one-sided while also winning the Citi Open last summer. Rafa, on the other hand, has been having tighter matches than before, especially the one with Alexander Zverev which went to five sets. But that doesn’t mean Rafa won’t fight.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Nadal’s Strengths:

  • Quick on the court.
  • Has defeated Monfils many times.
  • Can play long matches.

Nadal’s Weakness:

  • Prone to injuries.
  • Had a tough and tiring match with Zverev.

Monfils’s Strengths:

  • Confidence from cruising through previous rounds.
  • Also very quick and athletic.

Monfils’s Weaknesses:

  • Has only beaten Nadal twice.
  • Average serve.

Prediction: Nadal def. Monfils 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2

I think that Rafa, if he plays as he did in the Round of 32, will beat Monfils. Monfils has been known to be flashy and inconsistent. Of course, that doesn’t mean it won’t be an easy victory for Rafa. Monfils has been playing exemplary for the past few months and when they play, I’m confident that Gael will at least get a set–if not two–on Rafa.
