Federer vs Zverev: Swiss Comfortably Advances to Australian Open SF

Federer vs Zverev

Roger Federer cruises past Mischa Zverev in straight sets to earn a spot in the Semi-Finals.

As we predicted, Roger beat Mischa in straight sets. The match lasted about ninety minutes.

Federer vs Zverev Summary:

Set One:

The first set began with Alexander Zverev surprisingly choosing to serve rather than receive. Roger took advantage of this opportunity and took the first game with a strong start. On Zverev’s first serve of the match, Federer returned very well and got an early break, making the score 2-0. Federer had the early match momentum going his way and used it to take his next three service games and break Zverev again. This gave Roger the comfortable 6-1 first set win.

Set Two:

Mischa Zverev was unable to score his second upset of the week.

Zverev wasn’t happy with they way the first set went, so he approached the match differently in the second. He had a very strong service game and took the first game. Federer wasn’t about to let Zverev take control of the match, so he gave it all he could to hold his service game. Both held serve and Zverev upped his defense at net, winning more volley points and retrieving more passing shots. Federer stayed strong, however, and won the set 7-5.

Set Three:

The set started out at a 2-2 tie. However, from there, the match became one-sided as Federer pulled off shots that dumb-founded the crowd. He even pulled off a banana-shot of his own along with some other nice passing shots. Eventually, the Swiss closed out the match 6-2 by hitting a forehand winner.

 Game, Set Match:

Federer took the match comfortably with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 straight set win.

Analysis:

Zverev’s game was the same as when he played no.1 seed Murray. However, Roger knew how to beat this by staying calm and bringing out a variation of shots that Zverev could not predict. He also used his lethal net game to ensure that he won his serve game consistently. In the end, it was not Zverev who cost himself the match but Federer’s out-performance.

Upcoming Match: Federer vs. Wawrinka

Roger Federer will play long-time friend and Swiss teammate, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the semifinals. This is not the first time they have faced each other, so it is expected to be interesting. Stay tuned for a Match Preview!
